Title
Linking inflammasome activation and phagosome maturation.

Abstract
One-third of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, one of the most effective human pathogens, whose success is attributed to thedeployment of remarkably sophisticated immune evasion mechanisms. In this issueof Cell Host & Microbe, a new study unravels a novel strategy of immune evasionand enhanced bacterial intracellular survival, which is dependent on inhibitionof inflammasome activation by an M. tuberculosis-encoded metalloprotease.

PMID: 18407061, 17126540 IPAF and ASC have been previously associated with inflammasome activation by the Gram-negative bacteria Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which use their type III secretion system to inject IPAF activators such as flagellin in the cytosol of macrophages.
